This book reminds me of why I don't care for fiction very much. Everything is too predictable. The "hero" always prevails in every situation. The outcome of the entire story is exactly the way the author intends.Although Casserly apparently lived in India for some time, it is very clear that he was a racist who had little regard for the people of India except insofar as they were useful to the British colonialists.
The writing style of Casserly is fluid enough that the book is a very fast read - although I did have to rely on the Kindle dictionary look-up feature quite frequently to learn the definitions of words that are either quite archaic or were terms that were common during the colonial era but which have now passed from frequent usage. So technically he is a good author - I just object to the extreme racism and depictions of the indigint people of India and Bhutan.
Would I recomment the book? Yes. But only because it does give some insight into what life was like for the British occupiers during the colonial period. But otherwise the book is just too formulaic to be worth the trouble.

A great adventure, India circa 1920. Poison snakes, rogue elephants elephant stampedes, spies, traitors, battles, and a lovable elephant. What more could you ask for? Sure 'it has a damsel in distress and a Major in the British army as a hero and some of the story is predictable but what a great adventure awaits in this novel.
If you are a fan of the British Raj and old school adventure novels, you are in for a treat. A well-told tale of the British in India at the turn of the last century brings us tea plantations, hill stations, crumbling palaces, evil rajahs, a heroic major, a plucky heroine and a marvelous elephant, Badshah. Told with a keen observers eye to detail and nuance, the author's unique ability to describe places and situations makes this by-gone era seem vivid and alive. Bear in mind that, at a hundred plus years distance, the attitudes of the British may at times be distasteful, but even here this reveals the mechanisms of the plot as peoples and attitudes collide. I was entirely entertained and pleased with this book. And unexpected find and a very good read.
